The collection below showcases the work that I ask my students to do.  Each assignment demonstrates the ways in which I strive to connect disciplinary content, student learning, and effective assessment with creativity, collaboration and global citizenship.

Odyssey Ballads

Odyssey Ballads

A creative exercise that highlighted student understanding of narrative storytelling and the heroic journey, this assignment asked students to create original ballads recounting a book of Homer's Odyssey.

Student-Led Discussions

This activity, connected to I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, required pairs of students to work together to analyze a chapter from the novel and lead their classmates in a discussion.

Chinese Schools of Thought

Chinese Schools of Thought

Providing a final assessment to a unit on Chinese philosophies, this performance task required students to work together to create a comprehensive plan for a boarding school based on Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism or Legalism.

In this culminating assessment, students worked in small groups to promote a character from Golding's novel as leader of their island home.

A Seat at the Table

In this performance assessment, students played the roles of various characters from Strasser's The Wave, staging a board meeting to discuss the fate of one of the book's central characters.

Connotation and Denotation

In this assignment, students explored the use of metaphor in literature by creating Google drawings to examine the connotations and denotations of language that drive effective metaphors.

Perspectives Through Poetry

This unit allowed students to develop empathy and poetry skills by writing original poems based on excerpts from the book, Children of the A Bomb.

This activity reinforced students' abilities to recognize central themes in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.
